Panim Ve’Achor — Face and Back
Offered in honour of the Arizal, Rabbi Yitzchak Luria, the holy lion of Tzfat, who in a few short years gave Israel the language in which the inner Torah is still spoken. This maamar is given in his merit — on panim and achor, face and back, and on the higher Face concealed inside what appears to us as turning away.
1 · Hester Panim In Golus
“And I,” it is written, “ve’anochi haster astir panai ba’yom hahu, al kol hara’ah asher asah, ki fana el elohim acherim.” The possuk does not suffice with saying “I will hide My face,” but doubles the expression, “haster astir,” a concealment within concealment. And this very lashon is said with the term “Anochi,” which in many places denotes the revelation of Atzmus, as in “Anochi Hashem Elokecha.” So we are confronted at the outset with a wondrous paradox: the very verse that speaks of the deepest hiding opens with the name that hints to the deepest revelation.
Moreover, this “haster astir” is not a theoretical description, but the definition of the time of Golus, “ba’yom hahu,” the day in which the Shechinah is in exile with Yisrael. The experience of Golus is that of hester panim, that the Face of Hashem—His recognizable presence and revealed favor—is concealed. Yet together with this, the Torah earlier promised regarding the future, “Ve’ra’u kol afsei aretz es yeshuas Elokeinu,” that there will be a time when all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our G‑d. From one side, then, a double concealment of the Panim; from the other side, an ultimate revelation that reaches “kol afsei aretz.” And it is the very distance between these two psukim that forms the tension of our existence.
For in the days when “ve’ra’u kol afsei aretz,” the matter will be clear, that there is nothing besides Him, and His light will be manifest. But now, in the time defined as “haster astir,” not only is His Face hidden, but it appears to human eyes as though another power rules, chas veshalom. As Chazal describe the words “ki fana el elohim acherim”—that Yisrael turns to foreign powers, and measure for measure it is as though the conduct of the world is handed over to them; the nations prosper, their strength increases, and it seems as though their hand is the one that acts.
And this is emphasized in Midrashim that speak about Golus, that “kol ha’umos metzli’chin,” all the nations succeed, “veYisrael merudafim,” and Yisrael are pursued. Not only do the nations exist, but they flourish; they rule over Yisrael with a strong hand, and the Shechinah, as it were, is silent. The possuk says, “Zemeru goyim amoi,” that the nations sing over His people, rejoicing in their downfall. One who looks at such a picture asks: where is “Anochi Hashem Elokecha”? Where is the Face of the King?
And the Zohar haKadosh elaborates on this. In many places, and especially in the third chelek, it speaks concerning the time of Golus as a time of “istalkut panim”—the face is withdrawn—“ve’itgabruta de’sitra achra,” and the sitra achra, the other side, grows strong. The Zohar gives the image of a king who turns his face away from his beloved son and in that moment the servants, and even the enemies, dare to lift their heads. When the King shows His face, there is awe and bitul; when He turns His face away, there is room for brazenness. This is the inner meaning of “hester panim”—that the Panim, the revealed countenance of the King, is not seen by those below, and therefore that which is opposite to holiness can appear to have standing.
However, we must be precise. The expression is “hester panim,” the hiding of the Face, and not, chas veshalom, the hiding of the King Himself. The essence of Elokus fills all worlds and surrounds all worlds equally in Golus and in Geulah. The difference is only in the Panim. From this it is understood that “Panim” refers to a certain mode of revelation, the way the King turns toward those He loves. Panim is from the same root as “pnimiyus,” inwardness, and also as “lifnei,” before, indicating that the face is where the inner will and pleasure of the person are revealed—where one looks, where one is present.
Correspondingly there is “Achoraim,” the back. The Zohar speaks of those who receive “me’achorei hamelech”—from behind the King. The back of a person is the side that is turned away, lacking direct attention. When one gives to another from his back, it means there is no relationship of panim el panim, face to face; the giving is only in a way of external function, because circumstances require it, not because his inner will delights in the recipient. Thus, in general terms, Panim denotes gilui ratzon, the revelation of the Divine will and pleasure—that He desires a dwelling with the lower beings; Achoraim denotes the external conduct that allows the existence of worlds and of other beings, not as an expression of revealed love and delight, but as a necessary arrangement.
With this simple distinction we can return to the possuk “ve’anochi haster astir panai.” It does not say that Elokus will be absent, only that the Panim will be hidden. The life-force that animates all worlds, including the nations and even the sitra achra, continues, for if, G‑d forbid, He would withdraw His vitality entirely, nothing could exist for a moment. But that vitality is not in a mode of Panim; it is in a mode of Achoraim, externality. The inner delight and love are concealed; only the back is seen.
Yet here begins the real difficulty. For if so, that in Golus the Panim are hidden and only Achoraim are revealed, it should be that together with the concealment of the Face, also the flourish of the nations would be diminished. They should receive only the bare minimum to exist, as a servant who is sustained with a crust of bread. But what our eyes see is the opposite: in the very time of hester panim, the forces of concealment themselves grow strong, they expand, they rule; they build cultures, wisdoms, empires. And more than this, they often do so by utilizing powers and ideas that are rooted in holiness itself. They take the gold and silver of Egypt, the language of Torah, the technologies that derive from the Divine wisdom invested in creation, and they use them for purposes opposite to kedushah. It appears, therefore, not only that they receive from the back, but that they draw from the very place of revelation, chas veshalom.
This is the cry of every Jewish heart in the darkness of Golus: how can it be that those who deny the Face are those whose hands seem most filled with blessing? As the Navi complains, “Madua derech resha’im tzalecha, shal’u kol bogdei vaged?”—why does the way of the wicked prosper, all the treacherous are at ease? And similarly, in Tehillim, “Lamah tatzliach derech resha,” and “ra’sha ke’gevaya apo bal yidros,” the wicked flourishes; “kar’u al Hashem ve’al Meshicho,” and yet “lachem yatzliach darkam.” The very success of those who oppose Hashem seems to draw from the Source of success. If all is from Him, then their might is also from Him; but how can the concealment receive from revelation?
The Zohar sharpens this wonder. It says that when there is “hester panim,” then the sitra achra “shaltin al alma,” rules over the world, and “natrei pithcha,” they stand at the gates. And more, the Zohar describes that at times of “istalkut de’shechinta,” the other side “yonek mi’kedusha,” it derives nurture from holiness. On the surface, these words are astonishing: if the Panim of Kedushah are in istalkut, in withdrawal, how can the other side have any yoni’kah, any nurture, from there? If the King has turned His Face away, from where do the enemies receive their power?
We are thus compelled to say that even the nurture of the sitra achra is not, G‑d forbid, from the Panim, from the revealed will and pleasure of the King, but only from Achoraim. Yet our question returns and intensifies: why is it that in Golus, when the Panim are hidden and only Achoraim act, it looks to us as though the nations and the forces of concealment are drawing precisely from the Panim? They use the holy language, they cloak themselves in garments of righteousness and wisdom, they speak of justice and morality, they invoke the Name of G‑d in vain; in all this there is an appearance that they, too, enjoy His Face.
In other words: on the one hand, emunah obligates us to affirm that “Hashem tzilcha al yad yeminecha,” He is the shadow at our right hand, that all life-force is from Him and there is no other source. On the other hand, we say that there is a clear division between Panim and Achoraim, between that which is His inner will and delight, and that which is only an external allowance. But if so, how is it that in the state of hester panim, the Achoraim themselves seem illuminated, as though they were Panim? How can concealment be empowered in a way that appears to be from the very place of revelation?
This is the inner content of the words “haster astir panai”—a concealment within concealment. Not only is the Face hidden from us; also the very distinction between Face and Back is hidden to our perception. We look at the world and cannot discern what is being vivified only from the back and what shines with the light of the Face. Everything is mixed; the wicked prospers, the righteous suffers. And therefore there can be a thought, chas veshalom, that there is no difference, that all is alike, and that the sitra achra, too, drinks from the wellspring of Panim.
To begin to resolve this, it is necessary first to clarify with precision what is meant by Panim and what is meant by Achoraim in the supernal order—not only as a borrowed image from the human face and back, but as real modes of Divine hashpa’ah, of the flow of life-force into the worlds. For only when we will understand what is the essential geder of Panim, as opposed to Achoraim, will it be possible to grasp how the concealment can be so deep that the Achoraim themselves are misperceived as Panim, and yet in truth the Panim remain untouched and reserved for Yisrael and for the ultimate Geulah when “ve’ra’u kol afsei aretz.”
2 · Panim And Achor In The Ari
And this is what is explained in the writings of the Ari, that Panim and Achoraim are not only mashal of face and back, but are seder of hashpa’ah in the very etzem histalshelus ha’olamos.
For to understand this there is first to preface, in short, the seder that he establishes in Etz Chaim: that at the beginning “k’she’ala biratzono hapashut livro ha’olamos,” there was the inyan of tzimtzum, that the Or Ein Sof which filled kol hamakom was mitztamtzem, and remained only a reshimu, and afterwards a kav of light entered into the chalal. From this kav and reshimu, through seder of igulim and yosher, are drawn the olamos of Adam Kadmon and from there Atzilus, Beriah, Yetzirah, Asiyah. And in Atzilus itself the light is misdalshel in the order of partzufim—Abba, Imma, Ze’ir Anpin, Nukva.
Now, in these partzufim, the Ari speaks at length (in Sha’ar HaPartzufim and in many places in Pri Etz Chaim) of three general states: achor be’achor, panim be’achor, and panim be’panim. And he makes clear that this is not only a description of relative orientation, but it defines be’etzem the way the shefa passes from one level to the next.
For when two partzufim stand achor be’achor, each one is turned with its Panim away from the other, and only their backs are facing each other. This means that the inner ratzon-pnimi of each is not directed to the other; there is only an external hashpa’ah, in the way of din and tzimtzum. When they stand panim be’achor, the Panim of the mashpia is to the Achor of the mekabel—there is already a gilui pnimi in the mashpia, but the keli of the mekabel is still in a state of achor, of closure and limitation, and therefore it receives only in a bechinah chitzonis. And when they reach panim be’panim, then the pnimius of the mashpia is turned and bound to the pnimius of the mekabel; this is a zivug shel ahavah and chibbur pnimi.
According to this, it is understood that Panim is not merely “more light” and Achor “less light,” but they are two sugim: Panim is gilui ha’or as it is b’pnimiyuso, with ratzon and ta’anug to be mashpia; Achoraim is the side of the partzuf that is mislabesh in tzimtzum and gevul, to bring down the shefa into a bechinah of metzius nifrad, into kelim that feel themselves as something. The Achor is the place where the or is already so measured that it can tolerate the possibility of otherness.
And this is emphasized further by what the Ari explains in Sha’ar HaShemot and Sha’ar HaMiluiim, that the inyan of Achoraim is also in the very letters of the Divine Names. For the shefa of Havayah can be in two states: in the way of pnimius, as the simple four letters י-ה-ו-ה, or in the way of Achoraim, which is the spelling of the Name letter after letter—י, י-ה, י-ה-ו, י-ה-ו-ה. This is called achoraim d’shem Havayah. And moreover, there is the inyan of milui, that each letter is expanded by its inner letters—יוד, הא, ואו, הא—and this milui, too, can be in the way of Panim or in the way of Achoraim.
The Ari teaches that when the Name is in the state of Panim, the shefa flows in a straight, direct line from the simple letters, without much hispashtus into details of din. But when the Name is in Achoraim and milui, the light is drawn out into many particulars, into the letters that “come after” the revealed letter—this itself is a form of tzimtzum, that the or is already enclothed within the gevul of the letters. This extension into many tzirufim is the root of dinim and of the possibility of hester.
In other words: Panim of the Name is the gilui of the shem as it is klali, bound to its shoresh in Ein Sof, where chesed and rachamim prevail; Achoraim of the Name is when the hashpa’ah descends into the seder of details, of seder hishtalshelus, where the or is already mukbal and can be misdavek bo ha’acher. This is why, as the Ari explains, dinim are nimshachim from Achoraim d’Havayah, that the back-side of the Name is the makor of gevurah and tzimtzum.
And this is also the inner pirus of what he says regarding the partzufim of Ze’ir Anpin and Nukva, that in the beginning of their hisgalus they stood achor be’achor. For Ze’ir Anpin is the middos, and Nukva is malchus, the dibbur that brings out the worlds. As long as their zivug is achor be’achor, the hamshachah to the worlds is only through the back of malchus. That is, malchus receives not the pnimius of the middos, but only the external or that is already tzimtzum-dik, made fit to be the shoresh of nivra’im. Here the possibility of Golus and of chitzonim is already encoded: because there is a side of kedushah that is itself turned away from pnimius, serving only as a functional back.
Later, through aliyos ha’olamos and birurim, there can be panim be’achor—Ze’ir Anpin turns its Panim to Nukva, but Nukva is still in achor—until the ultimate tikkun of panim be’panim, when also the keli of malchus is rectified to receive pnimius.
Yet, even in the earlier states, Ze’ir Anpin and Nukva are partzufei kedushah; their Achoraim, too, are kedoshim. So how can there be a hold for the chitzonim?
The Ari answers this in Sha’ar HaKelipot and in Sha’ar HaNekudim, with the concept of yenikat hachitzonim me’Achoraim d’kedushah. The meaning is that the chitzonim can never receive from the Panim of any level; Panim is reserved for the pnimius of kedushah alone. But since the seder ha’hashpa’ah must pass through tzimtzum and gevul in order that there be worlds, and this tzimtzum is expressed in the Achoraim and in the letters of milui and achoraim, therefore there is in the back-side of every madrigah a certain “loins,” so to speak, from which the external can grasp.
In more detail: the achoraim of a partzuf, being the bechinah of limitation and measure, faces outward, to be mashpia to the next level. The pnimius is turned inward, unified with its shoresh. Now, since the lower worlds are already in a bechinah of keli and yesh, they are be’etzem “achoraim-dik” relative to the higher. When the shefa comes down through the back-side of malchus to enliven the worlds, that same channel, by its very nature of chitzoniyus and tzimtzum, provides a point of attachment for entities that define themselves in opposition to their Source. They do not receive a new shefa from Panim; they only intercept the external or that is anyway descending for the sake of birurim.
This is the doctrine of yenikat hachitzonim: the external forces “suckle” only from the leftovers, from the external glimmer that passes through the Achoraim. And the Ari emphasizes that this is davka from Achoraim ha’kedoshim. If there were no back-side in kedushah, no bechinah of tzimtzum that allows for otherness, there would be no makom klal for any externality to stand.
According to this, we can already begin to sense that the very possibility of Golus—where there is a “world” that appears independent, and within it forces that oppose kedushah—is predicated on the existence of Achoraim. For Golus is not only a punishment, but a state where the hashpa’ah is primarily from the back: the zivug of Ze’ir Anpin and Nukva is not in panim be’panim, the shem Havayah is not in pnimius but in milui and achoraim, and the or is heavily tzimtzum-dik. In such a matzav, the chitzonim can stand and receive, albeit only from the chitzoniyus.
However, this itself is not yet the full depth of our original difficulty. For from the Ari it is clear that the chitzonim take only from Achoraim; but in our experience of hester panim, and in the pesukim and ma’amarei Chazal, it appears as though they receive from the very Panim—“mashlim lo el panav le’abdo”—and the success of ra seems to come from a revealed hashpa’ah. So we must understand: what in the seder ha’Ari allows for such a deep confusion, that the hashpa’ah via Achoraim is misread as if it were from Panim?
To approach this, we must look more precisely at the geder of Achoraim as the Ari defines it. For we might think that Achor is only a concealment, an absence of light; but from Etz Chaim it is clear that Achoraim is itself a bechinah of gilui, only that it is gilui in a mode of gevul and din. The back is not darkness; it is a measured light, a contracted Name, a milui and achoraim of Havayah. It carries the Reshimu and the Kav into the place of chalal, into makom ha’olamos. Precisely because it is a true hashpa’ah from kedushah, though in a tzimtzum-dik form, can there be a mistake to see in it “Panim.”
And moreover, within the seder of partzufim, there are many bechinot where Panim and Achor interpenetrate. There can be a state where the Panim of a higher partzuf are oriented to the Achoraim of the lower, or where within one partzuf the pnimius is enclothed in its own Achoraim. This complexity—described at length in Sha’ar HaMochin and in the perakim dealing with katnus and gadlus—creates in the seder ha’elyon a matzav where the light of Panim must pass through many garments of Achoraim in order to reach the mekablim. It is this, as will be understood further, that allows in the tachtonim for a matzav of “haster astir,” where the very difference between Panim and Achor is obscured.
But before we can translate this into the lashon of Mikra and Zohar and grasp how it plays out in our world, it is necessary to recognize that all of this—Panim, Achoraim, partzufim, tzimtzum, milui and achoraim of shemot—is not a later development, but is rooted in the very first seder of creation, in the way the ten sefirot and the otiot ha’ma’amarot are structured as pnimius and chitzoniyus. And this is what will be clarified by examining the earlier sefarim of sod—Sefer Yetzirah and Sefer HaBahir—where the language is different, but the same inner division of inward essence and outer vessel is already hinted.
3 · Roots In Sefer Yetzirah And Bahir
And to see that this is so—that the division of inward and outward is not only in the seder of partzufim as explained by the Ari, but is already engraved in the very alphabet of creation itself—we must look back to the earliest sefarim of sod, where the lashon is brief and closed, but its remez is wide and open.
Sefer Yetzirah opens with “עשר ספירות בלימה ושלושים ושתים נתיבות פליאות חכמה,” and immediately it explains these ten as “עומק רום ועומק תחת, עומק מזרח ועומק מערב, עומק צפון ועומק דרום.” At first glance, this is only a description of spatial directions; but it is known that “רום” and “תחת” are not only above and below in makom, but also pnimius and chitzonius in seder hishtalshelus. The “עומק רום” of every sefirah is its inward depth, its kavvanah and ratzon, that which is turned, as it were, toward its Source; and the “עומק תחת” is its outward extension, the way it bends and inclines toward the lower, to be mashpia po’el and effect.
And the very term “עומק”—depth—already indicates two opposite aspects in one inyan. For depth is not like simple length or breadth that is open before the eye; depth is davka that which is hidden within, and from that hidden point there is a stretching outward. Thus when Sefer Yetzirah speaks of “עומק רום ועומק תחת,” it is not two separate things, but one sefirah seen from two sides: the inner, concealed “depth of height” and the outer, revealed “depth of below.” Only that there, in the lashon of the Tanna R’ Akiva, it is still not called Panim and Achor, but height and depth, above and below.
Moreover, the sefer continues and says on these ten sefirot that they are “בלימה,” and explains “כבלום פיך מלדבר ולבך מהרהר, ואם רץ לבך שוב למקום.” And in another nusach it is “בלימה בפה,” that they are held back in the mouth. This is a wondrous expression: on the one hand they are called “ספירות,” a lashon of mispar and sefer, revelation and articulation; and on the other hand they are “בלימה,” withheld, restrained. And this is the very inyan of pnimius and chitzonius in the seder of dibbur itself.
For speech has two bechinot. There is the machshavah she’b’dibbur, the inward meaning and kavvanah that are still “בלימה בפה,” not yet emerged into separate letters, but held as a simple point of intent; and there is the articulated otiot that go out into chutz, that can be heard and grasped by another. The inner bechinah is like Panim, the orientation of the nefesh to its own ratzon; the outer is like Achor, the side of the word that turns outward to the recipient and can even be misused or misunderstood by a stranger, chas veshalom. Sefer Yetzirah thus places at the root of the ten sefirot this double aspect: they are, in their pnimius, “בלימה,” and in their chitzonius, they become “ספירות,” expressed measures that can extend into worlds.
And similar is the inyan of the “שלשים ושתים נתיבות פליאות חכמה.” For netiv is a derech panimi, a path through which hashpa’ah passes from level to level. But every path has its inner corridor and its outer road. The inner netiv is the kav ha’mashpia, the line of intention connecting mashpia and mekabel; the outer is the form and structure that the path takes in the tachtonim—language, forms of halachah, structures of nature. The thirty-two netivot, as is known, are the ten sefirot together with the twenty-two otiot. And in each there is inward and outward: the sefirah has its hidden “עומק רום” and its revealed “עומק תחת”; the ot has its shoresh in “בלימה בפה,” the silent letter as it resides in the nefesh, and its chitzonius as it is spoken and written.
This is spelled out more in the seder of the otiot that the sefer delineates—the three mothers, seven doubles, and twelve simples. The three mothers are called “אמות,” for they are the inner wombs of all hishtalshelus: Alef, Mem, and Shin, that include in them the klal of avir, mayim, and eish. These are like the pnimius of the letters, the general middot and kochot from which all particulars are born. The seven doubles are already a descent into the side of hispa’alus and change—“כפולות,” for they can be read be’din u’be’rachamim (as a soft or hard sound). And the twelve simples are the many paths, the divisions and tzirufim that build the forms of the created world.
Here we see clearly a seder of penimiyus and chitzoniyus in the letters themselves. The “אמות” are the inner mothers, hidden roots—the Panim of dibbur. From them come the “כפולות,” which already have a bechinah of back and front within themselves (for each double has two sounds, an inner and an outer articulation). And from these flow the “פשוטות” into the multiplicity of words and names that construct the “חוץ.” The entire seder of creation by letters is thus an unfolding from inward essence to outward garment, from silent womb to articulated voice. Later Kabbalah will call this Panim and Achoraim; Sefer Yetzirah calls it mothers, doubles, simples—but the inyan is one.
And similarly we find in Sefer HaBahir, which speaks not in measured definitions but in meshalim, that all point to this division of lamp and glass, spring and channel, inner chamber and outer court. The Bahir says (in the known passage) that there is a lamp, and above it a glass, and through the glass the light shines. The lamp itself is the source of or, the fire bound to the oil and wick—that is the pnimius ha’or. The glass is only a kli, a vessel, whose whole inyan is to receive from the lamp and to spread its light outward in a manner that can be borne by eyes of flesh. There is also a “back” to the glass, where the light is weaker, and a “front” where it is stronger. But the nimshal is that every sefirah has an inward lamp—its ratzon and kavvanah—and an outer glass—its levush and keili through which it acts upon the lower.
The Bahir similarly speaks of a spring that flows into channels. The spring is covered, hidden; only its sound is heard, and its waters emerge through dug channels into fields and gardens. Here too, the spring is the pnimius of chochmah, the closed source that “אין רואה את ראשיתו,” while the channels are the chitzoniyus, the measured conduits through which the water is divided to each place according to its need. And the sefer emphasizes that if the channels are broken or turned wrong, the waters may flow into thorns and brambles. This is already a remez to the possibility that the outward aspect—separate from its inner spring—can become a place where zarim are nourished. But in its shoresh, the moshal is only teaching that there is always an inner Mashpia (spring, lamp) and an outer mashpia (channel, glass), and that the integrity of the latter depends on its alignment to the former.
And further, the Bahir uses the mushal of a king’s palace with inner and outer chambers. It speaks of those who stand in the heichal ha’pnimi, close to the king, and of those who remain in the chitzoniyos ha’chatzerot, walking in the courtyards. The heichal ha’pnimi is called the “בית אב,” the house of the Father, while the outer is called only “בית המלך.” The pnimius is the place of ratzon, where the king reveals his face to his beloved ones; the chitzoniyus is where his decrees are carried out by officials who may not know his inner thought. Again, the sefer does not yet use the terms Panim and Achor, but the structure is identical: there is an inner chamber, where the presence is direct, and an outer complex, where only the function and authority extend, not the inward da’as and kiruv.
From all these meshalim it emerges that in every sefirah there are two bechinot. There is its “lamp”—its pnimius ha’or, the side turned inward toward its Source, where it stands in simple adhesion to the ratzon ha’Elyon. And there is its “glass” and “channel”—its side turned outward toward the olamos, where that or is measured, colored, and limited according to the keilim, in order that the tachtonim should be able to receive. The first is the “עומק רום,” the depth of height; the second is the “עומק תחת,” the depth of descent. The first is “בלימה בפה”—speech still withheld in the inner mouth; the second is the articulated letter that goes out into chutz. And this is the very inyan that later is called Panim and Achoraim.
And if so, we can already begin to understand that Golus, which is a matzav where the chitzoniyus seems to prevail, is not an accident only because of chet, but is tied to the very seder of beriah: that there must be keilim and channels, outer chambers and glasses, in order that the or ha’pnimi be able to shine at all in a world of boundaries. The possibility that the outer become, for a time, detached in appearance from its inner—this is rooted in the structural distinction of pnimius and chitzoniyus that Sefer Yetzirah and the Bahir have already placed at the head of creation.
However, in these early sefarim the inyan is still clothed in remez alone. They speak of height and depth, lamp and glass, spring and channels, palace and chambers, but they do not yet describe the dynamic of sitra d’kedushah and sitra achra, nor the grasp of the chitzonim in the outer aspect. For this, it is necessary to come to the Zohar, where the same structure is drawn out into a full narrative of Panim and Achoraim, of face-to-face and back-to-back, of a king who shows his face to his beloved and his back to the stranger. And through that, the tension of Golus—how the outer can at times seem to dominate—will be set forth in its complete form.
4 · Zoharic Worlds Of Face And Back
And therefore, when we come from these remazim of Sefer Yetzirah and the Bahir to the holy Zohar, we find that the same inyan is no longer said only as a description of structure, but as a living story, a drama of faces and backs, of kiruv and richuk, of kedushah and sitra achra. For the Zohar does not suffice with saying that there is an inner lamp and an outer glass; it speaks of the King Who turns His face toward one and His back toward another, of a beloved who is seen face-to-face and of strangers who see only the hindside as He departs from them.
Thus we find, in many places, the description of the zivug of Ze’ir Anpin and Malka, the Nukva, when they are in a state of panim be’panim. The Zohar speaks of the time of Shabbos, of mo’adim and times of rachamim, as “b’hahu zimna da’ihu panim be’panim,” that the Small Face turns toward the Queen and they gaze one into the other. Then it says that “שעתא חדא אתייחדת קודשא בריך הוא בשכינתיה,” there is a unification of Kudsha Brich Hu and His Shechinah, and all worlds receive blessing. And the language is that there is gilui panim—“נהירו אנפין”—the shining of the Face.
But when, chas veshalom, there is a time of sin, of anger above, or of the awakening of dinim, the Zohar describes that then there is estrangement. Not only is there no panim be’panim, but even panim be’achor is interrupted, and it becomes achor be’achor. Ze’ir Anpin turns His Face away; the Shechinah is “בגלותא,” wandering in the fields, and it is said “אסתלק יקרא דקודשא בריך הוא,” the glory of the Holy One, blessed be He, is removed. This istalkus is expressed as a turning of the Panim away, an absence of the shining countenance, leaving only a remnant of Achoraim that can maintain the worlds in their external being.
And specifically then the Zohar introduces the other side. For it says that when “אסתלק יקרא דקודשא בריך הוא,” when the honor departs from the place of holiness, “אתער סטרא אחרא,” the sitra achra is aroused and strengthened. The picture given is that of a place that has been vacated of the King’s presence; immediately, outsiders, robbers and bandits—as the Zohar calls them—rush in to occupy the void. But they do not grasp the King Himself, nor His Face; they occupy only the place of His absence, clinging to the Achoraim, to the backside that remains when the Panim are hidden.
In many passages the Zohar gives a clear moshol: the King is traveling with His entourage; to those who are beloved to Him, the sons of His palace, He shows His face, speaks with them panim el panim, gives them words of love. But to the strangers who stand at the side of the road, He does not turn His face at all; they see only His back as He passes, they see the dust of His horses, the trace of His presence but not the presence itself. And this is called “קבלאה מאחורי מלכא,” a receiving from the back of the King, which is the inyan of the nations who receive their shefa from “achorayim,” as opposed to Yisrael who are bound in a bris ha’panim.
This covenant of the face is expressed in the Zohar’s well-known saying “ישראל אורייתא וקודשא בריך הוא חד הוא”—Yisrael, the Torah, and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one. The unity here is specifically described as panim be’panim: Yisrael cleave to the Torah, which is called “אור פניך”—the light of Your Face, and through this they cleave to the Panim of the Ein Sof as it is clothed in the middos of Ze’ir Anpin. The nations of the world, by contrast, are described as standing chutz la’achsadra, outside the covered hall, receiving only from the overflow that goes out “לבר,” to the outside, which is the aspect of Achoraim. This is the meaning of the language that they are “מתברכין מאחורי,” blessed from behind; their life-force is not a direct face-to-face covenant but an external, utilitarian shefa, given only in order that the seder ha’olam should be maintained.
And the Zohar makes yet a stronger contrast, not only between Yisrael and the umos in their permitted existence, but between kedushah and the sitra achra itself. It calls the sitra achra “צל דצל,” a shadow of a shadow, and explains that a shadow can exist only opposite a body, and specifically on the side that is away from the light. When the sun shines on the front of a person, his shadow stretches out behind him. So too, the sitra achra has no standing of its own, chas veshalom; it is only a “tutaltula d’gufa,” a trembling appendage of the body of holiness, and it clings only to the Achoraim, to the side which the light of Panim does not illuminate.
And this is the inyan of what the Zohar says on the possuk “אשרי אדם מפחד תמיד,” that one who sets his face below and his back above—“מאן דאית ליה אפין לתתא ואחורה לעילא”—this is the rasha whose orientation is inverted. For the Zohar there explains that the tzaddik stands with his face turned upward, toward the supernal Face, and his back toward the world; he receives from above panim be’panim and gives to below from his Achoraim. The rasha, however, as the Zohar describes, turns his face toward this world—panav lemata—and his back toward above—achorav lema’alah. That is, he relates to the upper worlds only in a manner of Achoraim, and specifically thereby he becomes a chitzon, a place where the sitra achra can grasp, because the back turned above is the handle for the shadow that clings below.
And here we see already that in the language of the Zohar, Panim and Achoraim are not only terms in seder hishtalshelus, but are measures of relationship, of orientation. Panim means that one turns, faces, directs oneself with ratzon and ahavah; Achoraim means a turning away, or at best a mere functional connection without inner adhesion. When the Zohar says that Yisrael are panim, it means that the entire seder of their being is to be turned toward the Panim of the King; when it says that the sitra achra grasps only the back, it means that the whole possibility of the other side is that there should be an aspect of holiness that is not turned with its face, but is only behind, only the heel and the dust of the King’s passing.
And this is emphasized also in the descriptions of the Shechinah’s Golus in the Zohar. When Yisrael do the will of the Omnipresent, it says that the Shechinah dwells among them, “שכינתא שריא על רישיהון,” and then the King is with the Queen in His palace, face-to-face. But when, chas veshalom, there is a descent of Yisrael, the Zohar describes that the Shechinah goes into exile “בין אומות העולם,” and it uses the expression that “אחורי מלכא אזלי בגולא,” the backsides of the King go into Golus. That is, the Panim remain above, united with the King in His hidden chamber, and only the outer garments, the Achoraim, go down to be enclothed within the places of concealment. And specifically in those Achoraim the sitra achra seeks to nurse, for she cannot reach the Face itself.
If so, according to the Zohar’s narrative, the entire existence of the sitra achra, and the flourishing of the umos in their present state, is by virtue of a hashpa’ah that is from the Achoraim alone. The Panim are guarded, reserved for the covenant with Yisrael, for “פנים בפנים דבר ה’ עמכם.” The nations, and all forces of concealment, stand only “מאחוריו”—behind Him, as it says “ישליכם מאחור גווך,” and their nurture is from the hinder part, from the side of the body that is turned away.
However, if we contemplate this well, a new difficulty arises—one that the Zohar itself evokes through its strong language of “אסתלק יקרא דקודשא בריך הוא.” For the description there is not only that the sitra achra grasps the back; it is that when the honor, the revealed glory of Hashem, departs, then the other side is aroused and rules. And in many places the Zohar describes the time of Golus as a time when the sitra achra “משלטא בעלמא,” dominates in the world, and all the nations praise themselves and say “כח ידי” etc. To human eyes it then appears, not only that they receive from some external back, but as though the very honor of the King has gone over to them, as though His Face is turned toward them, chas veshalom, and away from Yisrael.
In other words: on the one hand, the Zohar gives us the clear picture that the sitra achra is but a shadow clinging to the back of holiness, and that Yisrael alone have the bris ha’panim. On the other hand, in the experience of Golus that the Zohar itself describes in such sharp terms, it seems as though “הפך הוא”—the opposite—that the sitra achra has grasped hold of the very kavod, and that the Panim themselves, so to speak, are shining toward the powers of concealment, while Yisrael remain in darkness.
To resolve this, it is not enough to say in general that the other side has only a borrowed power, as is explained in many places. For our question is more precise: how can it be that from within the matzav of Golus the Achoraim appear as Panim, that the shadow looks like the body, and the back, to one who stands behind, seems like the only face? Since the Zohar itself teaches that the sitra achra can only cling to the back of holiness, there must be in the very definition of Panim and Achoraim a depth which allows for such an inversion in perception.
And this compels us to return from the Zoharic moshol to the more exact definitions: what is the true geder of Panim and of Achoraim in Elokus, such that the back can be a point of grasp for otherness, and yet never touch the face itself? How can the King show His back to the stranger in such a way that the stranger imagines he has been received by the King, when in truth he has seen only the dust of His passing? To answer this, it is necessary to enter more precisely into the seder that the later mekubalim have systemized from the Zohar—the inyan of Panim and Achoraim in the partzufim and in the sheimos—through which it will be understood how the sitra achra’s grip is always from Achoraim alone, and yet in Golus can appear as though it were from Panim.
5 · The Illusion Of Nourishment From The Panim
6 · Messianic Turning Of Face And Back
7 · The Higher Face Within The Back
8 · Avodah: Living The Future Face In Present Back
